Pragelato is a charming mountain village at about 1,600 meters above sea level, appreciated year-round for its natural beauty and its easy access from Turin. Its name comes from the Piedmontese word Pragelà, meaning “frozen meadow,” a clear reference to the harsh winter temperatures that define the area.
The apartment is part of a condominium built in the 1980s which, before renovation, suffered from several issues: poor thermal insulation in both walls and windows, humidity problems, and the use of low-quality materials for floors and furnishings.
The owners decided to undertake a full renovation to improve both energy efficiency and overall comfort.
Key upgrades included the installation of an insulated lightweight subfloor, the construction of internal wooden insulated partitions, the addition of a pellet stove with a forced-air system to distribute heat evenly, and the replacement of both radiators and windows—now wooden frames with triple glazing.
Furniture and finishes reinterpret the traditional alpine style with customized design details, made warmer and more welcoming by the natural tones of wood. For the wall paneling and kitchen fronts, reclaimed aged fir—salvaged from the demolition of old mountain huts—was chosen, giving the interiors an authentic and sustainable character. For the flooring, oak parquet was selected for the living room and bedroom, ensuring elegance, durability, and visual warmth.
The custom-designed kitchen blends seamlessly with the wall paneling and door, appearing as a refined wooden block. Inside, a niche (countertop and backsplash) is clad in Dioritic Gneiss, also known as Pietra di Perosa, a local stone that pairs harmoniously with the aged fir, creating a striking interplay of textures and tones.
In the bathroom, bespoke cabinetry was designed to maximize space and functionality. A wooden unit integrates the washbasin and conceals the washing machine, keeping the lines clean and maintaining a coherent, orderly look. The use of wood with water-repellent finishes adds warmth and texture, balancing the mineral presence of the stone surfaces to create a welcoming and practical atmosphere.
