ARCHITECT Brain Factory - Architecture & Design
STYLE Modern, Contemporary

Stepping into this panoramic penthouse just beside Porta Latina, one of the most striking gateways in the Aurelian Walls, you are immediately captivated by the sense of time suspended in motion created by the breathtaking view. Almost like a modern-day Virgil, it leads the eye through Rome’s history in a sequence of images stretching from the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana to St. Peter’s Dome, with the Baths of Caracalla in between. This effect is further enhanced by the architecture itself: the sloping roof planes shape the interiors in an original, dynamic way, creating natural visual corridors throughout the apartment.

Those same slopes, however, also produced areas that were difficult to use, especially where the ceiling dropped too low. The aim of the project was therefore to turn this constraint into one of its defining strengths, making the most of every part of the space.

The open-plan living area was designed as a series of zones determined by the pitch of the roof. The highest points were used for the living and dining areas, while the more challenging lower sections were transformed into reading corners framed by custom perimeter plasterboard bookshelves.

The dining area was intentionally raised to become the focal point of the open space and the best vantage point from which to enjoy the view. Between the large windows, the kitchen was set within a glass enclosure, turning it into yet another jewel within the apartment.

Transparency, the interplay of added and carved-out volumes, and shifts in materials and surfaces all contribute to the dynamic character of the interiors. The ethereal, minimalist quality of the all-white palette throughout the penthouse is warmed by the wooden parquet flooring and by marble-effect porcelain stoneware, which is also used in the bathrooms. The directional lines of the sloping roof have been further emphasized with LED profiles that cast a dynamic light across the open space, drawing the eye into an emotional visual journey that, from the very entrance, captures the observer in a constantly evolving spatial and temporal experience.
