A Contemporary Mountain Retreat in the Abruzzo Apennines

Nestled within the evocative landscape of the Abruzzo Apennines, this intimate mountain residence has been reimagined as a sophisticated contemporary retreat, where a sense of warmth and belonging is woven into every detail.

The existing building was relatively recent, yet the clients saw the potential to transform the modest holiday home into something altogether more distinctive: a refined mountain refuge, contemporary in character yet deeply connected to its surroundings. The architectural challenge lay in making the most of a compact footprint, creating an interior that feels generous, welcoming and effortlessly cohesive.

A carefully conceived scheme of bespoke furnishings makes every square metre count. Designed specifically for the space and crafted by local artisans, the custom joinery and furniture become an integral part of the architecture rather than simply furnishing it. Wood takes centre stage throughout the interiors, with natural oak in a warm honey-blonde tone establishing a soft, enveloping palette. Against it, white walls are finished with a specially applied plaster treatment, lending the surfaces a subtle tactile quality and an understated sense of elegance.

Material contrasts further define the different areas of the home. In the living spaces, porcelain stoneware flooring evokes the rugged texture of split stone, grounding the interiors with a distinctly alpine character. In the bedrooms, the harder mineral palette gives way to warm parquet, introducing a softer, more intimate atmosphere.

The result is a jewel-like retreat that balances contemporary design with the timeless appeal of a mountain home. More than simply a holiday residence, it has become a place shaped by the vision and dedication of its owners — a true family refuge conceived from the outset as a home to return to, season after season.

Throughout the living and kitchen area, as well as in the bedrooms, TESI tubular radiators add a functional yet highly distinctive detail. Their slender, sculptural profile combines performance with a refined aesthetic, complementing the interiors with a contemporary interpretation of the cottagecore sensibility.
