Complete renovation of an apartment in a 1903 building in the Sants neighborhood of Barcelona, designed to create a comfortable home with a clean, functional layout. The project focuses on generous spaces and natural materials, avoiding decorative effects and luxury solutions.
The former gallery, once enclosed and largely taken up by a small bathroom, has been completely opened up. The space is widened as much as possible, removing unnecessary visual barriers and allowing natural light to reach the very back of the room, which is now used as the living and dining area.
Most of the original flooring has been preserved and restored. It stands out in contrast with the white walls and ceilings, and its bold colors gain even more presence. Where the original floors could not be recovered, white marble and porcelain tiles have been used instead.
The new elements, such as the custom-made furniture, are built in birch plywood, while the new windows are in pine. The existing timber joinery, both inside and out, has been painted white to keep a clear distinction between the new additions and the original features.
All materials are natural, sustainable and largely reused (marble, wood, mosaic). In winter, heating is provided by radiators, while in summer thermal comfort is achieved through cross ventilation supported by ceiling fans.
